I started installing PV systems in 1982 on the Big Island of Hawaii. After 3 years of teaching myself the trade, I started in an apprentice position with a local electrical contractor doing commercial, residential and industrial wiring with the occasional PV job thrown in to the mix. After I became more versed in wiring I was taken on by another electrical contractor as their PV specialist. In 1998, after getting my California electrical contractors license, I moved back to the mainland and started Energy Design in California . I moved back home to Oregon in 2002 and restarted my business while teaching solar design and installation at Lane Community College. At a certain point I was unable to continue to both teach and contract and had to let something go. I choose to let go of my teaching position because by that time there were several people working with me that depended on me for training and employment. Since then we have been steadily growing and branching into other energy services along with PV.
