I live in a 110 year old farmhouse, on grid, in the Santa Cruz mountains that my family and I renovated to get as close to net zero energy as we could. We haven't achieved net zero yet, but we will when we add the next round of PV.

We did achieve getting the house off propane heating, by installing hydronic heating utilizing a highly efficient air-water heat pump boiler, so that our heating fuel would be electricity. The heat pump also heats the DHW.

On the roof is a 4 kw solar array with enphase inverters and PVT system which preheats the DHW and provides forced air space heating during the day. The renovation also included adding passive solar design elements that help with heat gain in the winter.

Founded Independent Energy Systems in 2001 which merged with Real Goods Solar in 2008. I worked for RGS for almost 3 years in executive management after the merger.

Evans Energy Systems is my new venture which will help me get back to what got me into solar and energy in the first place - being hands on and helping my community reduce fossil fuel consumption.
